Morocco 1986: The African Team That Topped a Group Containing England

Mexico, 1986. Group F.
Morocco were drawn alongside England, Poland, and Portugal — three European nations with substantial World Cup pedigrees. Nobody expected Morocco to finish first. They did.
The Atlas Lions won their group without losing a game, drawing with Poland and England and beating Portugal. It was the first time an African team had topped a World Cup group. England, featuring Gary Lineker and Glenn Hoddle, finished second in the same group.
Abdelrazak Khairi and the Generation That Surprised the World
Morocco's 1986 squad featured technically gifted players who had been developed through a well-organised domestic league. Abdelrazak Khairi and Mustafa El Haddaoui were the attacking weapons, while a disciplined defensive unit provided the foundation. They were organised, tactically astute, and difficult to break down.
The Round of 16 Exit
Morocco were eliminated in the Round of 16 by West Germany, losing 1–0 to a Lothar Matthäus free kick. There was no disgrace in that exit. West Germany went on to reach the final. Morocco had, in any case, already made their point. Africa could top a World Cup group. The template for future generations had been set.
